Philodendron stems

Question
Many of my philodendron stems are leggy and look like they are in  approximately 1 inch sections
usually at the point where the leaf comes out. Also I am not sure that i am cutting them back properly, I am cutting them just below a leaf which then leaves a one or two inch stem before the previous leaf, but they do not seem to grow from there anymore. I have a very large sunroom with windows all around and the plants get plenty of light.

Answer
Hi Karen,

If they are not pruned regularly, Philodendrons, like many vining plants, become leggy and eventually very stringy looking. This is particularly true if the light is on the low side or if the pot is too large. Fertilizer will not help.

When pruning a stem, cut just above a point where the leaf attaches to the stem. That way there will be no visible stub left behind. New growth usually emerges just below where you made the pruning cut and grows out from there.

The cuttings can be rooted in water.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
