plum tree

Question
My plum tree really bore fruit this past spring. Everyday I was out picking them up. this went on for about 6 weeks.
Is there a way to sterilize this tree without killing it?
Someone said that this year was especially good for fruit trees. I live in Central Kentucky.

Answer
Hi Rose,
Thanx for your question.  Yes, there are sprays available to prevent fruit trees from setting fruit.  Be careful of what you get as some are harmful bees and the U.S. has experienced an extreme reduction in the honey bee population over the past few years.

There are two sprays that come to mind Florel and Fruitone.  Here is a link that explains more about this.  These sprays are expensive and must be applied at the appropriate time.  You may want to consider an arborist or your local County Extension agent for advice and assistance.  If you need contact information for your county extension agent, let me know your county and I'll get the info back to you ASAP.

I hope this helps.
Tom
