fuji persimmon

Question
Seeds are rare from this fruit.  I have six-eight seeds which I wish to start. What is the method? Thanks so much. Amy

Answer
Hi Amy,
Thanx for your question.  I guess you didn't browse the past answers as this subject has come up several times.  There is a wealth of information here on the website.  Might save you some time next time.  At any rate, here we go again....   ;o)

Fuji persimmons are the result of hybrids.  To grow this tree from the seeds of its fruit, will not result in similar fruit due to hybridization.  Hybrids do not come true from seed.  Often, you will get plants and fruit that are inferior.

It's still fun to try and bear in mind it will take 5-7 years for you to realize your results.  Put the seeds in a damp paper towel and place it in the refrigerator for 60-90 days.  After that, plant the seeds an inch deep in a pot of good potting soil keeping it moist (not soggy) and warm.  Germination will occur sporadically over several weeks to several months.  Keep track of how many seeds you have.  Some seeds will be sterile, meaning, they will never germinate.  Once the seedlings are large enough to handle, gently prick them out of the pot and pot them up separately.  After the last frost, place the seedlings outdoors in a protected area where they are not exposed to direct sunlight or heavy rain or hail, etc. for about 10 days.  After that, the seedlings need to be planted in a weed-free area and open to full sun for at least 8 hours a day.  I hope this helps.
Tom
