new tree growth

Question
I have a Bartlett tree about 8 years old. Seems really healthy. It has decided to grow another "tree" about 6 inches from the trunk. I have dug down to look to see it was attached to the original tree and yes it is.(coming out of the main root system. Should I cut this "new" tree. If I don't it will come up right beside the other. Or can it be transplanted somehow?

Answer
Hi Rusty,
Thanx for your question.  I would cut off this "new tree".  It's more likely part of the graft host growing out and you don't want that.  I would trim all of these away as they will take energy away from the main graft (most fruit trees are grafted onto hardier rootstock). You don't want the rootstock to start sending up growth.  Cut it back and keep cutting it back as it occurs.  I'm not a tree expert but this is what everything I have read indicates.  If you would like to access one of our fruit tree experts, please go back to Home/Gardening and click on Gardening and then on Fruit.  There are two experts with whom you can consult on this matter.  I hope this helps.
Tom
