Daisy Tree

Question
My daisy tree is dying, it has a few new growth from the dead twigs, but most of the plant is dead, is it beyond saving?

Answer
Hi Audrey,

Daisy trees (Montanoa) are very difficult plants to maintain. Unless you have a solarium or greenhouse, they usually do not get enough light when indoors. Yet, they will not survive temps much below freezing, so they cannot be kept outside year round in most part of the US.

You haven't provided any information as to what environment you have for your Daisy Tree or how you have cared for it, so I cannot diagnose why it appears to be dying or whether or not it will recover. The fact that is still putting out some new growth means the roots are probably okay and that is very important. On the other hand, the loss of most of the other leaves suggest that it may not be getting enough light or it may not have been watered properly.

I suggest that you prune your tree back sharply, even if that means cutting off some of the new growth. Then, provide as much direct sunlight as possible and water it as soon as the top half-inch of soil feels dry to the touch. It will take time, but look for signs of healthy new growth emerging and filling out the tree.
