growth on tree

Question

galls
I noticed this tree while hiking through a woods of hickory, maple, oak and beech.  The tree had a large number of big bumpy growths, maybe 3 to 9 inches across.  All I've been able to find on the internet suggests it might be Phomopsis galls.  What do you think?

Answer
Sheri:
Phomopsis (fungus disease)can be a cause, among others that can cause these "galls" on the tree.  Sometimes bacteria, like crown gall can cause these as well as some insects.

A laboratory examination of the tissue would be required to ID the specific agent.
