Magnolia Seedlings

Question
How do you germinate Magnolia seedlings from a Magnolia pod?

Answer
Once the seed pod swells, prune the pod from the plant. Place the pod in a brown paper bag for three days to allow it to completely dry. You can then shake the bag to dislodge the seeds or manually remove them carefully from the pod. Place the seeds in an envelope which you will place in a Tupperware container. Store the container in the back of the refrigerator for a minimum of three months to simulate a dormancy period. You can then plant the seeds this fall or next spring.

Have a great weekend.

Mike
