peonies

Question
I have a large branch from a tree peony. If I dip it into rooting hormones and then put it in soil will it root? It is currently sitting in a glass of water to keep it alive.

Answer
Hi Kelli,
thanx for your question.  I doubt if you will be able to get a branch from a tree peony you've had sitting in a glass of water to root from dipping into rooting hormone and then planting although that is generally what one does to root cuttings.  Cuttings should be fresh, greenwood and about 4-6 inches long.  I'm not an expert at this.  I've heard that cuttings aren't as successful as grafting.  You can try to do what you described and see if it works.  For cuttings to be successul, they need to be in a warm and humid environment so place the growing medium inside a clear plastic bag and mist 3 or 4 times a day.  I hope this helps.
