Growing cherries from seeds

Question
Hi!
I never knew that I liked cherries until I started working at a grocery store and got to eat them.

I have collected about 100 bing and rainier cherry stones this month. some I bought, some......were snatched. ;)

Anyway, first off I am aware that they may not fruit and they may be hybrids and may not be sweet etcetera etcetera

I'm mainly after the JOY of growing something.

So, could you please tell me how to get cherry seeds to grow?

I live in zone 7.

The internet says bings can take 2 years to germinate. Is this true!? I can't find much info on rainier cherries at all.

Answer
Desirai,
Thanx for your question.  If you will use the FIND function at the top of the page, you can often find similar answers and in some cases exactly what you're looking for without having to wait.  Growing trees from fruit seeds is a very popular subject and I have answered a number of questions in this regard over the past several years.  FYI.

Ok, basically, just take the pit and do one of two things:

1.  Plant one inch deep in a pot and leave outdoors over the winter.  There needs to be 90-120 days of temperatures consistently at or below 40篎 in order to break the dormancy of the embryo inside the pit.  Be sure to water the pot during the winter if there are long dry spells.  The seed should germinate in the spring when warm temperatures return.

2.  Place the pit inside a damp paper towel and seal it inside a plastic baggie and place in the fridge for 90-120 days.  After 120 days, plant the seed one inch deep in a pot and keep it warm.  Germination can occur within a few weeks or over several months.

On occasion, you may have a seed that requires two periods of cold/warm.  I'm not a botanist, so, I'm not sure what causes this but in my experience, one cold treatment usually suffices with most stone fruit.  I hope this helps and good luck!
Tom
