gnats and worms in house plant

Question
I bought a tropical plant from our local dealer, I first had gnats, which I was told to put soapy water in there and they some what went away, now I see worm like looking things in there and there dead, should I just throw it away or what should I do now?

Answer
Lori, without seeing the insects its hard for me to determine how or what they were; I would take the plant out of the container it came in (assuming it was a plastic nursery type) repot it in a decorative pot with new well drained potting soil, and then spray the plant with an insecticidal oil based product like "ultra-fine oil" or "organicide"; that should take care of the problem, after the insect problem is taking care of, periodically check it for any further hatches (though I don't think you will have a problem)..remember to mist your tropical plant daily to keep the humidity around it high, and dont overwater it...good luck Nick
