BANANNA TREES

Question
HAVE BANANNAS ONE STEM HAS TWO BUNCHES OF FRUIT ABOUT 6 INCHES LONG. I LIVE IN SAVANNAH GEORGIA. HOW CAN I TELL WHEN THE FRUIT IS READY, AND IF ITS GOOD TO EAT. THANK YOU

Answer
Hi Marion!..ok .. when the bananas "plump up" which usually takes about 3 months from the time they form; we are getting into the colder season now (even here in south Florida) so the time span is going to be longer because of the slow down in growth on a banana plant during colder temps. The bottom line is, in the spring your fruit will be ready to be cut off the plant (while still green incidentally), when the individual bananas have swelled and after 2 weeks or so, you don't see any additional swelling, they should be cut and hung in a cooler darker area to ripen up (when you hang them, hang them inverted, opposite to the way they were hanging on the plant) trick here now though Marion, is protecting your plant from frost and freezing; if your plant gets stung by either, then the fruit will not develop any further...hope this helped...Nick
