Ti Trees

Question -
I bought a 11 gallon ti tree plant with two stalks each having a crown(one stalk smaller than the other by half).  The larger one grew beautifully, but the smaller one died, I managed to rescue one of the crowns, nursed it back to health, and now I would like to plant it back on the smaller cane, but how do I do that, and what extra care do I need to give it?
Answer -
Melanie,

I'm not sure i understand what you mean by plant it back on the smaller cane.  You cut the top off of the dying plant right? Then did you plant it in soil or grow it in water till it got new roots? Now you want to put it back on top of the old dead trunk that it came off of originally? If I am wrong please explain exactly what you want to do.  If you want to discuss this by phone I would be happy to discuss it with you. I live in north-eastern Indiana and I'm on central time. My phone # is 260-637-5104. You can call me tomorrow between 9 and 10 am central time or between 7 and 10 pm central time. Or you can answer my questions here and I will give you answers.

Hi Darlene,
Thank you for getting back to me, I replanted the plant in soil, and it's taken very well, looks really healthy, and I want to know how to plant it back in the cane that it came from when I bought it.  Thanks again!
Melanie

Answer
Melanie,

It is not possible to put the plant back on top of the cane it came off of. That cane is no longer growing. It may have side shoots coming out lower on the trunk but the top of the trunk is dead. Your new plant that is now very healthy has it's own roots that are feeding it. You can't cut them off and put it back where you took it from. It will gradually grow and as it does the lower leaves will turn brown and die and when you pull them off it will reveal the plant growing a trunk of it's own. You can put it in the same pot with the larger one if you would like and you will have the smaller plant under the larger one. You may be thinking of grafting techniques to put 2 plants together but that is for the experts and then would not work in this case. Good luck with your plant.

Darlene
