Hardy Banana Tree

Question
Hi Nick.  It's Lisa again.  Do you cut the tree down before winterizing?  My Mom said that someone told her that you dig the tree up and put it in a dark place in the winter.  Is that a way to winterize?  Zone 7

Answer
Hey there again:) actually you don't cut it, just mulch the bottom heavily; bananas will continue to attempt to bear fruit, meaning they will grow right out of a cut, if you cut it down, new growth will come from the center and before the cold even arrives you will have a new plant, and tender at that, so it will be even more suseptible to the cold. Bottom line Lisa is let it stay and mulch the bottom, this will protect the underground corm so that it will survive to grow in the spring..Nick
