knats in my corn tree

Question
I have had my corn tree for about a year. it has done well until recently it has knats and i think the bugs are starting to kill the tree. I have used household insecticide but it doesnt really seem to be helping. maybe i am using the wrong thing? i really dont want my tree to die. please help

Answer
Hi Adelle, Corn plants are pretty resilient, I would say it may need its soil changed out; the insects you are seeing probably are not the cause of its decline. Purchase a larger container, or keep the same one, but empty the soil and clean the container well, then repot it with new soil and make sure to add a drainage medium to the bottom 2 inches. The insects are more then likely hatching from the soil, and this should take care of that problem also. If in the future, you  see any indication of insects on the plant itself, then use household Isoprohyl Alchohol on them (use a small spray bottle). Nick
