dogwood tree disease

Question

dogwood
I have a very young dogwood that i planted in March 2008..it has been doing good up until approx 1 month ago, when i started seeing the edge of the leaves turning brownish and crispy, there are also very tiny red looking spots over the leaves, there isnt a leaf on the tree that doesnt have this issue.  I live in Central Texas, in the Lost Pines near Bastrop..pure sandy soil (no dirt whatsoever)My dogwood is planted amongst the pines with dapple sunlight.  I soak the soil twice a week each for 24hrs on a trickle.  My crepe myrtle approx 50yards away also has a similar disease but without the red spots, just browing on the edges of the leaves, i have other crepe myrtles with no issues, nearby. what could this be? My guess is a fungus.

Answer
I would think there is an environmental problem or maybe a nutrient deficiency or soil pH problem.  I would have the soil tested.  If the pH is extremely low the right nutrients arent getting into the tree and the other plants.  Sounds like you may be watering OK.  The leaf burning at the edges is usally a symptom of drought or soil problem.  See if the soil test provides an answer.  Your local county extension office can help you with submitting the sample.  Let me know if this does not seem to be the case.  Thanks.
