Indian Rubber Plant PRUNING Question

Question
Ive read and been told that the ideal time to prune back my indian rubber plant is while it is dormant.  I live in the south and it lives outside during the summer, so it is certainly not dormant right now...but, it is in DESPERATE need of a pruning. Im wondering what the worst case scenario is if I prune it back now. Its suffering and should have been cut back earlier, but I need to do something now.
Thanks!
Liz

Answer
Hi Liz, they never go dormant, they will slow growth in the cooler season, but dormancy is a total cessation of growth, and they do not; that said, go ahead and cut it back, being careful not to get any of that sticky sap on you. Rubber trees are very resilent plants, you won't hurt it. Nick
