pruning rubber plant

Question
I have a rubber plant approx. 30 yrs old 10ft tall.  It is top heavy and the branches are sagging.  Would like to prune it down to approx. 6 ft , need to know how to prune, what size pot would be needed and do we need to treat the cuts.

And would this size reduction be harmful to the plant.

Thank you,

Answer
Hi Peter,

As long as your tree is healthy, there should not be a problem with your pruning off the top 4 feet. In fact. regular pruning is a good idea. Prune just above a leaf node (place on the stem where the leaf attaches to the stem). New growth should slowly start to emerge just below where you make the pruning cut. There is no reason to treat the cuts other than to put some tissue on the cuts to keep the white sap from running on the floor or carpet.

To propagate the cuttings, use only the top 12 inches of each stem cutting. Cut off and discard the lower, older portions of these stems. Insert these tip cuttings in a small pot (no larger than 6 inches in diameter) of damp potting mix. Place it inside of a clear plastic tent to maintain the moisture in the soil and around the leaves. You can remove the plastic in about a month.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
