Yoshimo Japanese Weeping cherry

Question
Hi, my tree is all limbs that are asymmetrical and the weight of them is cause my tree to lean a little.  Also, the stump is very narrow in diameter and I was wondering if I should stake the tree more, trim the heavy branching causing it to lean.  Would anything make it focus on building a thicker and straighter base? Thank you so much, jenn

Answer
I would not prune any limbs off right now. The tree needs the foliage to provide energy to grow a root system and to grow more diameter. Generally a tree concentrates on growing roots and foliage before it dose diameter. The trunk growth will come with age. Until it get a larger trunk you can brace it or if it is a small tree stake it to help keep it from bending over. Here is a web link on how to stake a tree properly.  http://www.daytonnursery.com/tips/Tree_Staking.htm
