planting redwood trees

Question
I would like to plant a small grove of redwood trees on a portion of my 1 acre home lot in Nothern California. I would like to plant 5 or 6 trees and would like to know what spacing I should use and configuration. Thanks Mark Tammi

Answer
In determining your spacing, you have to consider that the branches will spread about 15-20 feet out from the tree and while the trees can handle having the branches intertwined you need to consider whether this is what you want (and it will take 15 years to reach this).

When you say a grove, I assume you are looking for something that will have a natural feel to it. You will want some light but not a lot, and you want this to happen in the next few years. Therefore, I would recommend spacing that is slightly closer, so it gets that grove feeling sooner. So I would plant in the 15 - 20 foot spacing.

If you want a natural feel, then plant your trees in a relatively random manner, both in terms of direction and inter tree spacing.

If you want some thing a little more formal, you could try a circle, or a classic European which a looks like the 5 on dice 2-1-2-1 (there is a French name cinq something or other).

Hope this helps.
