mold in oak trees

Question
I had a limb that fell off it had purple between the bark, could that be some kind of mold or mildrew.

Answer
After a tree limb dies there are many different decay fungi that will infect the woody cells. Their job is to help break down the wood and allow the material to decay. These decay fungi will not harm the living cells and thus are nor a problem with living trees.
