oak trees & worms

Question
Last summer my family moved into a house approximately 30 years old with lots of oak trees.
We have what seems to be an infestation of worms/caterpillars which create webs and dangle from the trees.  They appeared suddenly and its quite amazing walking through the garden about fifteen minutes after we just knocked down all the webs.  I don't seem to notice this at other homes in the area, and we certainly didn't experience this at our previous home.  We live in central eastern texas and have lived in this area for years.  This is the first time we have seen this.  Our neighbors say its normal. Ha! I don't think so.  Please help.

Answer
Sounds like you have or had Fall Webworms. These caterpillars make webs on the branches of most hardwood tres in the late summer or fall. Here is a web link that describes the insect and control maesures. http://www.spcbtx.org/consumer/webworm.pdf

The best controls are done as soon as the webs appear.
