I planted a maple to help brace a retaining wall.If I cut the top will it tend to grow wider as opposed to taller?

Answer
No it may kill the tree. The top is the source of terminal growth and if it is cut off you stand a good chance of killing the tree. Maples are fairly tall trees and if the space you have it is not suitable for tall trees I would replace the tree with a shrub that will not grow tall.
