bent dogwood tree

Question
approx . 20 year old Dogwood tree. It has bent to the side
as it had huge Larch tree next to it. Can we correct this
bend now that the Larch has been cut down.
It is about 20 some odd feet high.

Answer
Dear Mary:

If your Dogwood is anchored well by its roots you could try a wench and comealong. These tools should be used with extreme safety precautions due to the tension that will be applied as you put the entire trunk under pressure. Begin the process approximately 3 to 5 feet above the most severe bent.  Note that excessive pressure on the trunk will cause cracking and splitting which must be avoided because of the risk of possibly killing the tree.  Listen carefully for a slight cracking noise as you apply tension with the wench.  When you hear the cracking....stop and tie off the comealong to the nearest tree trunk or an extremely sturdy concrete set post.  A nearby tree trunk is the best anchor tie off.  Suggest the initial tension application remain for 60 days and then check monthly to make adjustments.  You would need to make adjustments in increments over time.  I would also recommend pruning off some branches on the bent side to remove some weight.

Good luck!
