new growth on Colorado Blue Spruce

Question
Last fall, I purchased two small Colorado Blue Spruces 'Baby Blue' and overwintered them in their pots. Since planting a few weeks ago, the smaller one (about 12" tall) has developed many candles. The larger one (about 24") has no new growth. Should I worry?

Answer
As long as the needles are green the tree will be OK. It sounds like just shock from the planting. IF you have not done so I would mulch around the tree with not more than 3 inches deep of organic mulch not piled up on the trunk. This will help hold moisture around the roots. I would water once a week with 1 inch of water--place a pan under the tree and turn the sprinkler on and when the pan has 1 inch of water in it stop. This will be plenty of water with the mulch.
