Red Hot Pokers

Question
I love my Red Hot Pokers!!!   Those red/yellow blooms that
poke their heads up every year are a real treat.

I live in ventura county of california and I'm wondering how
this beautiful shrub should be cut back or thinned out.   Does it
like to have a "well" at its base?

Thank you advance,

Steve

Answer
Steve,

These plants can be cut back to about two inches each spring to remove old growth before the new growth starts.  As for the "well" if you are referring to making a basin in the mulch to help collect water it can not hurt.

Good luck

Gary
