Paperback Maples

Question
I purchased two paperback maples 1 1/2 years ago and this winter was very wet...records for snow falls... it was ridiculous here in Southern WI. Now it's early Spring and both trees have tons of buds on them but that is all...no leaves. I fertilized with tree spikes and water regularly. Every two days or so...but no leaves and now red shoots are coming out everywhere. Is their anything I can do to get these buds to leaf out or am I losing these trees???

Answer
The trees may be suffering from cold injury and transplant shock.  If the red shoots are coming from the base of the tree, cut them off.  The tree is attempting to grow from the base and this is not good.  Then wait and see if this forces the leaves to come out.  All you can do is wait at this point.  Sounds like you have done everything else right.  I would give the trees some time to make their colorful debut.  Your spring still has some time before I would give up on them. Good Luck.
