arborvite issue

Question
I have a row of 15ft arborvite that never recovered from their winter color...have never fertilized, but they always came back in spring to vibrant color.  I have 180 privacy fence and now there are 5 that are brownish gold in color.  What can you suggest?

Answer
Janice,

I would recommend fertilization for the row to help try to green them up. I am just afraid that it is late in the year and they should already have shown growth. Check the plants for mites, as these insects could also cause a brownish gold color. Hold a sheet of white paper under the branches and shake the branch. If mites are present, you will see tiny black or red spots crawling around on the paper. If they are present, treat the plants with a registered miticide.

Good luck,
Ed Gulliksen
