Calla Lilies

Question
We have tried planting those packages of multi color bulbs.  When the flowers come up the 2nd year they all turn pink.  Pink is not my favorite color.  Why would they all turn the same color if they are all suppose to turn different colors?

Answer
Hi Katie,
Thanx for your question.  When you planted the calla lily rhizomes the first time, they were different colors and the second year they came up pink?  The only thing I can think of is feeding.  Did you feed them?  Some bone meal and a bulb food would be my recommendation.  Some flowers will change color depending upon what kind of nutrients they are taking in.  Some, like certain hyrdranges, change color depending upon the pH of the soil; pink for alkaline soil and blue for acidic soil.  I'd try the feeding route first and then if they come back pink again, I would try to contact the grower or company and see if you can get more information from them.  I've never heard of calla lilies changing color like that but I've never had it happen to me either.  I did some research on the Internet and didn't find anything to that regard.

I hope this helps.
Tom
