pruning shrub and hedge

Question
I have a Globe Blue Spruce - Picea pungens 'Globosa' that has outgrown its location and either needs to be dramatically pruned into the 'dead' inner growth - or replace the plant... Did I mention it is beautiful. Can I prune it back or does it have to go?

Also I have a Boxwood Hedge in the same garden, with the same situation. Can it be cut back into dead inner growth?

Answer
Hello Kevin

Conifers as a whole don't take kindly to being pruned and wont regenerate if you cut into the 'old' wood.

Although you don't say how big the tree is now, it is probably too big to dig up and replant, so I think it may be a case of 'replace'!  I'm sorry about this - I know how lovely Blue Spruce are.

If you do decide to replace it, be sure to look carefully at the label on the new plant - it should tell you the ultimate height and spread of the plant or how big it will grow in 10 years!

Better news for your Boxwood hedge though.  It will tolerate hard rejuvenative pruning in late spring provided that you give it an application of fertilizer and a good mulch afterwards.
