REmoval of dead bush root from a granite cemetery monument

Question
I have a  very old  remains of a dead bush that root are still in the  monument. Can they be drilled out or dissolve without harming the granite  monument.  Please advise.  Thank you for any help you can provide.  Tried salt peter from the garden store did not work.  Bush was cut back years ago but roots not removed.

Answer
Hello Dorothy

It can take years for roots to decay - as you no doubt know!  You could use a solution of epsom salts or a commercial stump and root remover to speed up the process - but it will still take time.

The main problem I can see is that the monument could actually be being held up by the roots and removing the them may destabilize it, making it dangerous.

You really need someone to take a close-up look at this situation - do you have a local organization that looks after this sort of monument?  If so, they may be worth contacting.

Sorry I can't be of more help with this.
