Beginning roses

Question
I would like to know if I cut of one piece or stem of a rose bush can I begin another plant from this or do I need seeds?
My friend has long stem red roses and I trim her roses yesterday.  So inside a pot in my kitchen sits many trimmings.  Do I have to just put them in dirt or do I need to leave them in water?  Or do I have to start from seed?

P.S. I live in Los Angeles CA

Answer
Here are a couple of web sites that will give you all the information you need to start a new rose bush from a cutting. I would make sure you try as many cuttings as you can but many of them may not take and grow. Lynnette
