replanting roses

Question
I have 2 rose bushes that aren't doing well because the trees behind them grew and they only receive about 3 hrs. of sunshine. I live in North Myrtle Beach, SC. I believe zone 8. Is it too late to transplant these roses to a sunny area?
Thanks for your help!
Ruth

Answer
The best time to replant a rose is when it is not growing as it will be dormant and not know it was moved. However your roses are not going to do well because of the situation you described. I would then move them now. Water them well the night before, have the new holes ready, cut them back by a third and then replant, if possible, late in the day. Because you can't help damaging the frail little feeder roots, you have to water daily for at least 6 weeks. Don't give any fertilizer until you see a lot of new strong growth coming. You want the rose to make new roots not spend the energy on the top growth. because the roots have been moved and damaged a little, using a foliar spray on the leaves, will mean  the nutrients will be taken up right away. It is a good way to fertilize moved roses.
