Animals eating new growth

Question
I have a small animal eating the new growth on my roses.  I am not sure what kind of animal (mole, vole, mouse) as I have only seen the damage.  Try as they might, my roses cannot grow!  How can I trap or repel this rose eater?  The annuals I planted in the same area have been eaten completely as well (asters and marigolds).  The other perennials are fine (Irises and daisies). Help!!

Answer
From your description of the damage, it could also be deer or rabbits that are eating your roses. A live annimal trap is the only way to catch them. Usually the animal shelters rent them out. The only way to protect the roses is to place a round cage of small opening chicken wire around the rose with three stakes treaded through the mesh so the animal can't get under or push it over. Hope this helps. Lynnette
