Question
Could you please tell me the botanical name of the Diana Princess?Of Wales Hybrid Tea Rose?
Thanks so much!  Ruthie

Answer
Hello Ruthie, thank you for your question!  The Hybrid Tea or Large-Flowered Rose, as the Int'l. Rose Society now refers to them, has its origins in two original tea-scented roses from China.  These Tea roses are rather tender and prefer warmer climates, because they have the species Rosa gigantea (aka Rosa odorata) in their ancestry.

'Diana, Princess of Wales'was introduced in 1999 by Jackson & Perkins. The rose's parentage is Hybrid Tea 'Anne Morrow Lindbergh'X Hybrid Tea 'Sheer Elegance'.  The international code name for 'Diana' is JACshaq, the capital letters being the hybrider's or patent owner's code name.

So, botanically speaking, the rose would be written, Rosa hybrid tea var. 'Diana, Princess of Wales.' Or, to simplify it Rosa 'Diana Princess of Wales.' Her parentage has so very many crosses in her past, that no species name can apply accept for the modern designation of Hybrid Tea or Large-Flowered.  If she were a species rose cross it would look like this: Rosa X hibernica, which is the botanical name of the wild Irish Rose.

I hope this answers your question, but do feel free to write again with any questions you have!
Best wishes,
Eirinn
