lady banksia rose

Question
My lady banks is three years old and has never bloomed.  It gets enough sun, water and fertilizer.  Along the same planting line, my hydrangea nor spirea also have not bloomed.  All are well tended.  Azaleas along this same line also hardly bloom at all.  Any advice?  There are no large trees near by only dogwoods in another bed.  Thank you.

Answer
In a garden if one plant is not doing as it should be, then the plant has a problem. However when many or different plants are not doing well then it is could be a problem in the soil. Also if you get a type of spring where it can go from a warm spell to a cold one, then many plants will get their flower buds frozen.Last of all, hard pruning in the spring will cut off most of the flower buds if a rose makes flower buds on last years wood which Lady Banks does. Because of that you always cut her back right after flowering.
Because you are looking after them well there is enough nitrogen but what appears to be lacking is the chemical that helps a plant to bloom and that is phosphate. There may not be enough in your soil. Also perhaps chemicals of some sort got into the area before you started to garden in it. This year give your rose some tomato fertilizer which is very high in phosphates. Use the amount given for a mature tomato plant. The azaleas are acid loving and do best with a fertilizer for only acid loving plants. The hydrangea depends on what colour you want it to be. If blue then use Epson salts plus a normal type fertilizer and same for the spirea. Hope this helps.
