Lots of grass growing in my rose garden

Question
I have 3 rose bushes, what exact kind I do not know. My yard grass decided to take root in my rose garden. Can I use weed and grass killer around the rose bushes. If not what can I do to get rid of all of the grass without having to spend hours pulling it up by hand, which usually doesn't work anyway. Help me please

Jen

Answer
The problem with weed killer is that if there is any movement when you use it and it gets on the rose leaves then it will kill the leaves and may damage the leaf bud area. Also if there is any new growth coming from the base a weed killer will kill that too. There is a product call Grass Begon sp? which you can use and it won't damage the rose canes. Another way to get rid of grass around rose canes is to use a weed killer but not as a spray. Get a cheap small paint brush and paint it on the grass. As long as the weed killer touches the grass it will be taken down to the roots. You may have to do it twice as grass can be very tough and come back from a small root.
