Growing grass over old garden area

Question
I have 2 vegetable garden plots in my backyard.  They measure 10 ft. x 25 ft. approx.  Were there when we bought the house 2 years ago.  Tried gardening but do not have the time, plus have a 1 yr. old now.
Question:  I want to remove the gardens and grow grass.
How do I attempt to do this and account for weeds.  The soil was very good for gardening!

Thanks,
Greg

Answer
Hi Greg, First spray the area with glyphosate.  It's a non- selective herbicide that will kill anything growing there now, but does nothing to the soil.  You can seed or sod just as soon as what you sprayed is dead (follow label instructions). It's sold under the name of Round-Up, but is also packaged by a number of other companies for a fraction of the cost and usually in a higher concentration, making it more affordable than Round-Up.
Then till the whole area, level and then sod or plant your seed.  If you don't know what grass to plant and at the proper time, consult your local garden center.  Then start your maintenance program (pre-emerge herbicides, fertilizing, liming, etc.) per instructions of your local garden center.  Jim
