south florida rose growing

Question
I recently moved to Boca Raton, SE Florida, from California whee I had glorious roses.  I am about to plant a roses garden here (I'm about 20 minutes West from coast). What roses are recommenmded for this hot and humid weather.  I like continuous bloom, some fragrance, floribunda and would be great if they were disease resistant too.  One thought is Olympia or Leonardo Da Vinci.  My Elena is not doing well at all. I like most colors.  Krys

Answer
Southern Florida has soil that is mainly sandy with a little peat and limestone in it and roses will do okay in it.  Florida Cooperative Experiment Stations tests have determined that roses grafted on Rosa fortuniana rootstock grow larger, more vigorously, produce more flowers and live several years longer than plants grown on any other rootstock such as Dr. Huey or Multiflora. This type of rootstock is good because Florida soils often have nematodes  and roses budded onto it will resist the damage these nematodes do to the roots of roses.
Nelson Roses in Florida are wholesellers but here is their  list of the roses that will do well in Florida

Also a few Austins that are fine for your area too. Abraham Darby, Sharifa Asma, The Crocus Rose, Tamora and William Shakespeare 2000.
All rose gardeners have to deal with the soil and climate they are in and in mine, which has poor sandy soil and gale force winds, there are many roses I would love to have but must keep to the ones that will do well in my PNW area. That is the same for those that garden in Florida. When you select only those that have been proven to do well you will have few problems. But It is always interesting to trial a few that please you. I do and and sometimes I win with a rose that is supposed to not do well in my area and actually does. Hope this helps.
