Growing Grass

Question
I live in the Atlanta area and I would like to plant grass seed in my front yard.  There are a lot of trees around which make the yard very shady and not to mention the million leaves in the winter.  I've been told that the acid from the leaves will inhibit the growth of grass in my yard, can you please tell me if this is true and what type of grass seed I should choose? Also the yard is on a slight slope, how can I keep the rain from not washing the seeds away?

Answer
Jena:

I would not worry about the acidity caused by leaves.  Actually, over time, the soil moves toward neutral because of microbial activity on leaves.  Pine needles may keep soil on the acid side.  Grasses have a wide range of pH tolerance.

Leaves may starve grass from sunlight, but they must be very deep for that to happen.  Just rake and/or mow the leaves so that sunlight reaches the ground.

I would plant a mix of a new fescue variety and bluegrass.  The old Kenblue bluegrass works for me.

Best wishes.
