non-flowering wild roses

Question
I live four hours north of Vancouver, BC.  I have had a wild rose in the yard for years. A few years ago, it stopped flowering.  No buds have appeared in about three or four years.  There are cultivated roses on either side of it, about four feet away and both are doing well. Can I get it to flower again?

Answer
That's very strange. It is the first time  have heard of a wild rose not blooming. Wild roses bloom on the tips of their laterals coming off the main canes. If you prune a wild rose you cut off the flowers but some should survive. Also they won't tolerate some sprays so again, if you sprayed the modern roses that could effect their blooming habits. Another reason I can think of is if you had a nasty cold winter, the cold could have killed the flower buds and or even damaged the bud eyes and that would stop the rose from flowering. Finally, if the rose was deposited it in your garden by a bird, it could be one that is not native to the area and again that could have an effect. Hopefully you can get a answer. Why don't you ask on Brad Jabert's blog? In my opinion he is B.C. most knowledgeable rosarian and very kind.
