seperating roses

Question
is there a safe way so that roses may be split and transplanted to make more bushes from one rose.  i have some roses i would really like to get to grow in other places in my yard, I live in western new york along lake ontario

Answer
All roses are budded onto what they call an understock. This is a very vigorous rose and when they blend the two the top modern rose gets a lot more vigour than if it was on it's own roots. So if you looked at the rose bush it would have the roots of one rose and the top of another. Because of that you can't split the two because you will not only kill the understock you will also kill the top modern rose. If you want to make another rose the same, then you have to take cuttings and they will be the same as the main rose you bought. Here is a web page that will tell you how to do it.
