Knockout Rose Bush

Question
I planted a knockout rose bush last year but did not know to prune it in the spring.  I planted it next to my deck and a couple of the branches are growing outward instead of up.  Should I tie to branch to a stick or something or how can I get the branches to grow up instead of out?

Answer
The Knock Out rose tends to start growing upwards and then it will bend over. If you don't want the canes to bend over then cut them back by about 50%. That will make the canes branch out and also slow down the upwards growth. Then next spring really prune the bush back hard to make it studier and hopeful it will not bend as much. Giving a Knock Out rose too much fertilizer will also tends to make excess tall growth which will bend.
