cutting roses too short

Question
I have eight knock roses going up my walkway abouttwo years old, they have been vey full and full of color, I stupidly did not know how short to cut them back, so I did and somone said they may be tooo short, What should I do just to make sure they don't die over the winter I live in Mass, Should I place, cut up a small rug and place on easch one and then mulch  ???then  to protect against the weather?

Answer
Hi Nancy,

How short did you cut them?  Once I know that, I can give you some advice.  Please give height and width.  My first instinct would be to use plastic pots with the bottom cut out and place over the roses and fill with leaves/mulch.  Do you get snow constantly during your winter.

Also, do you know if your roses are grafted (there should be 'knot' above root shaft) or own root.  These would be pretty much straight from the canes to the roots.

Just answer back and I will help you from there.

Jay
