roses

Question
When to cut back and can I make another rose bush from the cuttings, mine is very overgrown but beautiful and want to put some more of the same at different spots in my yard. Thank you.

Answer
Hi Rosie (how appropriate!)

Roses can be rooted at any time of year, but the cooler months, November through February, are the best in terms of success. So feel free to undertake this now, or wait for fall. You sound like you have experience doing this, but just in case I'll throw in a few tips.

Pick a stem that has recently flowered, one that preferably has either withered flowers, or better yet, hips beginning to form. Remove those flowers or hips down the the spot where the first set of healthy leaves forms. Six to eight inch stems are best, and should be cut at a 45 degree angle.

Have I provided you with enough information? If not, please feel free to write again.

Best wishes,

Donna
