caring for daylillies

Question
I recieved a potted red volunteer daylily as a gift from coworkers. When I brought it home it was beautiful with one big red flower open. When I woke up the next morning, it was completely whithered and fell off later that day. The next day, another flower opened and looked great. But of course, the next morning, the flower was shriveled and lying on the ground. I have hsd it in the sun, part shade, watered...don't know what to do. Please tell me if this is normal and how I should care for this plant.

Answer
Hi Michelle,
Thanx for your question.  Day lilies are named such because the bloom only lasts for one day, that's why they bloom a lot.  Day lilies are very hardy so just make sure they don't completely dry out.  I don't even feed mine and they bloom beautifully.  We have a day lily show here in Kansas City and I always buy my rhizomes at good prices and enjoy the blooms the next year.  I have two 20 foot rows of them from an almost white one (it's actually very pale yellow) to one that is so purple it's almost black.  Enjoy your lilies.
Tom
