Moving..Want to take my perennials with me.

Question
I have been renting for 5 years and am moving into my own home.
I am trying to find a way to bring my perennials with me. I have many different varieties, and just planted rose bushes this spring.

Can I move them this fall? When is the best time to transplant?

Answer
Hi Kim,
Thanx for your question.  If you can move your perennials now, do so.  The key is to get them moved before the ground starts freezing (30-45 days before freeze). This will ensure the roots get acclimated to new surroundings.  Cut your plants back to a few inches above the ground, so they are tidy and manageable.  Dig around the drip line of the plant so that you get as much of the root ball as possible (for bushier plants, the dripline is where rain or water falls from the leaves around the plant).  Even the rose planted this spring can be moved, just prune it back and dig up as much of the root ball as possible.  Make sure the holes you did in the new yard a large enough to comfortable accommodate the root ball, amend with some composted manure, tamp the earth back neatly around the plant, water the plant well and mulch with a couple inches of leaves or cypress bark.  I hope this helps.
Tom
