moving a plant

Question
hello
i have two indoor cherimoya plants, one is about 6" tall and growing nicely with several branches. The other one is about two feet tall and recovering after one year with two leafs left, and is now staring to grow branches as well. My problem is that we are leaving Louisiana to move to northern Kansas, and since i don't know the first things about plants i don't know how i can transport them without damaging them. Can you help me ? i really grew to like them .
thank you for your time .
Nadine

Answer
Hi Nadine,
I just realized that I misread your questions - thinking it was 6-feet tall, not 6-inches, as you stated. Needless to say, a van will not be necessary to move your plant! All of the information about protecting it from cold is still applicable. I apologize for any confusion.

Hi Nadine,

Cherimoyas are unusual indoor plants. Have you gotten yours to fruit? If so, let me know your secret.

This is a very cold sensitive plant. Moving would be less of a problem if you were moving during the warmer months. Norther KS is pretty cold at this time of year. In addition, you have to protect the plant from physical damage during the long trip.

Due to the cold, it must travel in a heated vehicle. If you do not drive it straight through, then you will have to take it inside with you when you stop over - even if it is an hour for a meal.

Do you have a heated van that can accommodate a 6-foot plant in an upright position? If not, you will have to lay it down on its side. That will require careful packing around the soil and wrapping of the branches.

Before I get more involved, let me know when and how you will be moving your Cherimoya and ho long it will take. When I have that information, I will be better able to help you.

Regards,
Will Creed
