princess lilies

Question
I live in east Tenn.,fearing a big freeze I dug them up in huge clumps, dirt & all. They are now sitting in my heated basement in boxes. The nursery where I bought them is no longer in business. I was freaking I might lose them. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks, Sharon

Answer
Hi Sharon,
Thanx for your question.  The princess lily which is a cultivar of Alstroemeria (Peruvian lily) is rated hardy to Zone 7.  I think most of Tennessee (except mountainous areas) is in Zone 7.  You could apply a heavy mulch to them and I'm sure they would be alright.  Because you have already dug them up, they should not be in a heated basement as they will begin to sprout.  If you can find a cool, frost-free, dark place to store them, this will be optimal.  Temps should be from 40-55 F to keep them dormant.  Plant them back outdoors after the last frost.  Princess lilies are available through many on-line nurseries such as Parkseed.com (Parks).  I'm not endorsing them, just using them as an example.  You can do a Google search and find them all over the place.  I hope this helps.
Tom
