cranesbill transplanting

Question
Hi Tom
I have 2 large groupings of cranesbill in my garden right now and they seem to be taking over the other plants I have near them.  I would like to know if it's possible to transplant them to another garden (full sun).  If so how and when should I do this?

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me.

Answer
Hi Christy,
Thanx for your question.  Crane's bill grow best in part shade to full sun in well-drained soil that does not dry out too completely.  Transplant rootballs in the late summer or early fall.  Did up the plant around the drip line (where water falls off the leaves onto the ground) and dig deeply enough to salvage most of the root ball.  At the time you extract the rootball from the ground you may have a significant enough of a root ball to divide it into 2 or more plants.  Do this with a sharp knife or saw.  Make a hole in the new garden space that is slightly deeper than from where the plant came.  Line the hole with composted cow manure and then gently set the plant into the hole spread the roots out comfortably so the plant isn't stuffed in and crowded.  Cover with remaining dirt and water well.  Water once a week if no regular rain.  I hope this helps.
Tom
