Transplanting to larger pot

Question
I have inherited an Ivy, not sure what kind.  I think it needs to replanted to a larger pot.  When would be the best time to repot this Ivy.  I cannot send a picture as I have not way of doing so.  Please help.  Thanking you in advance.

Answer
Hi Susanlee,
Unnecessary repotting is the most common cause of unhealthy plants. Ivy in particular really does not like to be in a pot that is too big.
Signs that a plant is in need of repotting is a constant demand for water, slowed or stopped growth and roots growing on the surface of the soil. If you have these signs and think the Ivy need repotted then lift the plant carefully out of the pot, if there is mostly all roots and little soil then go ahead and repot. Never repot a plant into a pot more than 2 inches bigger than the pot it is in, preferably no bigger than 1 inch. A plant in a pot that is too big could develop root rot because too much soil around the roots usually stays too wet for too long.
As a general rule the best time to repot plants is in the spring but you can repot anytime if the plant needs to be repotted and cannot wait until spring. You just don't want to repot a plant while it is in a dormant cycle. Repotting causes a plant stress and when it is in a dormant period it cannot recover as well or as quickly as it can during a growing period.
I hope this helps. If you have any questions or need additional information please don't hesitate to ask.
